Postoperative complicationsSeromas and postoperative collections
A seroma is a fluid collection that may develop after surgery. Ultrasound helps assess its location, extent and characteristics to support care planning.
I assess seromas and other collections after plastic surgery, including collections around breast implants. I also assess abscesses and hematomas for guided drainage when indicated.
Not every seroma requires drainage. When indicated, ultrasound-guided aspiration allows the needle to be followed into the collection to remove fluid. The decision considers symptoms, volume and progression.
Fluid may build up again, so follow-up and communication with the surgeon are part of care.
Outpatient proceduresThyroid aspiration and biopsy
Assessment of a thyroid nodule may include fine-needle aspiration (FNA), which collects cells for cytology. Ultrasound guides the needle to the selected nodule.
The indication depends on ultrasound features, size and the clinical context. Not every nodule needs aspiration.
The sampling technique and need for other approaches are determined individually. Results are interpreted alongside imaging and medical assessment.
Outpatient proceduresBreast biopsy and aspiration
When indicated, ultrasound-guided sampling obtains material from an abnormality visible on ultrasound for laboratory analysis.
Fine-needle aspiration can collect cells or fluid. Core needle biopsy removes small pieces of tissue for histopathological analysis. The choice depends on the finding and the diagnostic question.
A biopsy request does not confirm cancer. Results must be correlated with imaging findings and clinical assessment.
Other image-guided biopsies
I perform thyroid, breast and general soft-tissue aspiration and biopsies when indicated. I do not perform prostate biopsies. Organ biopsies and deep procedures, including liver drainage and drainage of cysts and deep collections, are assessed case by case and scheduled in an appropriate surgical setting.
